Long-Term Independent Study is a collaborative model. We provide the professional guidance, curriculum, and resources; parents provide the daily learning support; and students develop the habits of independence, responsibility, and curiosity that are at the heart of Montessori education.

Hands-on, child-centered learning aligned with California standards and Montessori philosophy and practices.
- Educational materials and learning resources
Curriculum, assignments, and supporting resources for home and community-based learning.
- Weekly teacher check-ins
Regular communication and progress monitoring to keep students supported and on track.
- Assessment and progress support
Guidance with student growth, state assessments, and academic planning.
- Technology support
A Chromebook for accessing Google Classroom, online lessons, and teacher meetings.
- Compliance and record-keeping
Attendance monitoring, work review, and all state-required independent study oversight.
- Community connection
Optional field trips, enrichment activities, and opportunities to connect with other LTIS families and the Redwood Coast Montessori community.
Parent Responsibilities
- Parents serve as the primary learning guide at home and play an active role in their child’s education.
- Support and guide daily learning
- Maintain a consistent learning routine
- Communicate regularly with the teacher
- Attend required parent/teacher meetings
- Submit student work and required documentation
- Help ensure participation in lessons, meetings, and program requirements
Student Responsibilities
- Students gradually build independence while remaining connected to their teacher and learning community.
- Complete assigned work and projects
- Attend weekly teacher meetings
- Participate in online lessons and discussions
- Set goals and reflect on progress
- Practice organization, responsibility, and independence in their daily learning
- Share what you’ve learned with others during presentations and exhibitions.
